Since January 01, Shane and I have been distributing blankets to the homeless in downtown Spokane. We have so far distributed 75 blankets and over 4,500 masks. Recently our Summit Church Bible Study Group donated to our mission and we bought 650 emergency blankets (Mylar blankets). These blankets not only provide thermal protection, it also keeps body temperature down in the summer heat. Plus, they are waterproof. Our appreciation and thanks to our friends who responded to our call for donation.
Spokane has been experiencing windstorm, rain and today, we woke up to frost. The homeless veterans were aware of this emergency blanket and were appreciative to receive them. A woman huddled in a blanket shivering. Shane wrapped the emergency blanket around her. Another man in a sleeping bag was too cold and too tired to get up. Again, Shane took it upon him to wrap the emergency blanket around him and tucked another one inside his sleeping bag. One man has a tattered pair of gloves and the skin on his fingers are cracked. He asked for a pair of gloves. Unfortunately we don’t have any. Shane gave him a few pair of latex gloves instead so he can use them to keep the old gloves dry.
Do you have some old gloves you would like to donate?
I’m sure the homeless folks would appreciate them.
We drove to a few spots to check on the ‘regulars’. The image at the top was taken yesterday. Today, everyone has packed and left. The police wanted them off this pavement. One of the homeless men said they were heading to another street.
Shane has so far distributed over 70 emergency blankets and will continue to look out for the homeless folks frequently.
